3 Quick Car Fixes
You don't need a mechanic for every auto repair.
1. Install new windshield wiper blades
Windshield wiper blades should be replaced at least twice a year
- Tell the auto-parts clerk the length of the wiper blades, along with the make and model of your car.
- Lift the wiper arm and squeeze or push the release mechanism to remove the old wiper blade.
- Insert the new blade and repeat on remaining wipre arm(s).
2. Change an engine air filter
A car's air filter collects dirt and dust -- and needs to be replaced periodically.
- Pop open the hood of the car. The air filter is typically located between the front grill and the engine.
- Take off the screws, clips, or wing nuts on teh cover of the air-filter housing and remove the cover.
- Pull out the old filter and insert the new one.
- Replace the cover and tighten the fasteners.
3. Replace a headlight bulb
Today most cars have a composite headlight, allowing the bulb to be changed without replacing the entire headlight assembly. Halogen bulbs, which are smaller, brighter, and last longer, are typically used. (Be sure to handle halogen bulbs only at the base.)
- Turn off the car's lights and engine. Open the hood.
- Depending on the car, you may be able to reach behind the headlight to remove the bulb. If so, turn the knob counter-clockwise, remove the old bulb, insert the new halogen one, and replace the knob.
- If you need to remove the whole headlight, take off the locking clips or other fastener, then gently pull out the assembly. Change the bulb and replace the assembly.
