Renting the Right Car

It may sound obvious, but when renting a car, be sure you get one that's big enough for all your passengers. When you need more comfort on a long drive, 3-5 adults should get at least an intermediate or full size model. Travel advisor Ed Perkins recommends, "With two or three big adults in the rear seat, consider going up to a premium model, such as a Crown Victoria, or even a luxury vehicle such as a Lincoln Town Car or Cadillac DeVille."

To help you understand what you typically get for each type of car categorization:

• Economy typically means a Chevrolet Geo Metro
• Compact can be a Chevrolet Cavalier (usually 2-door), Dodge Neon or something equivalent.
• Midsize generally signifies a Cavalier (4-door), Pontiac Grand Am, Dodge Stratus or similar.
• Full size is usually something like a Dodge Intrepid or Ford Taurus.
• Premium may be a Buick LeSabre, Chrysler Concorde, Ford Crown Victoria, Pontiac Bonneville, or similar model.
• Luxury includes mainly Cadillacs and Lincolns.
