Tip from union members using AT&T Wireless

These days smartphones are almost indispensible, helping us to stay in touch by voice, text, email and Internet everywhere we go.

But they're also expensive. At up to $400 each for some new models, smartphones can put a major strain on the budgets of working families-especially since the kids all seem to want them, too.

That's why Union Plus offers rebates of up to $200 to union members who use their Union Plus Credit Card to upgrade to a new smartphone and data plan with AT&T, the only national unionized wireless provider.

The $200 rebate is an additional saving on top of the 15% Union Plus discount on select AT&T wireless plans that thousands of union families are already using to save money.

Candace Hale of Canby, OR, and American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 6732, had been eying the iPhone 5, but couldn't justify the price. "I had an old phone," she says, "but I didn't want to spend the money on a new one."

It was an email newsletter she received from Union Plus that called her attention to the rebate program. "I always check it out to see if they have any good deals for me," she says. "In this case, the timing was perfect."

Candace estimates she'll save hundreds of dollars this year by being a union member thanks to the 15% discount on her monthly select wireless plan.

"Plus," she says, "I really love my new smartphone. I never would have gotten such a nice one without the Union Plus rebate."

Evian White of Miramar, FL, and United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2320, also loves her new iPhone 5, and agrees with Candace that Union Plus discounts are another great benefit of being in a union.

"I'm president of my local, and Florida is a so-called 'right to work' state," she says. "When I'm talking to people who are considering joining the union, I find many of them aren't aware of all the ways union membership can save them money-including benefits and discounts that can more than offset the cost of their union dues. Union Plus discounts are one of many great reasons to join the union," she adds.

These days there are more and more smart reasons for enjoying union pay, security, solidarity, benefits and discounts-including this rebate on smartphones.

Help if you don’t know your union

Your union membership dictates which Union Plus benefits you are eligible to use.

  1. What your national union’s name (not just your local number)? Scroll through the list we have to see if you recognize your union.
  2. What type of work do you do (select your occupation)?
  3. Do you have a union member card or union publication/letter that shows the name of your union? Find something with the name of your union, not just a local number.
  4. Is there a shop steward or work colleague you can ask what the name of your union is? You can even ask your human resources department to tell you the full name of your union?
  5. Do you have a Union Plus Credit Card? If so, the name and logo for your international union should appear on the front of the card.
