How to get the most out of your college visit
Fall is a popular time of the year for high school seniors to visit the campuses of the colleges they’re interested in attending. Following are some tips to help your college-bound student get the most out of your college visits.
- Learn as much about the college as possible before the visit. Students can surf the college’s website and browse through their catalog or viewbook.
- Participate in a group information session at the admissions office.
- Take a tour of the campus.
- Sit in on a class that may interest your student.
- Talk to a professor (or two) in your student’s chosen major.
- Scan the bulletin boards and read the student newspaper.
- Wander around campus; visit the library, the college bookstore, the athletic facilities, the student center, etc.
- If possible, spend a night in a dorm.
- Talk to students – ask what they like and dislike about the college, why they chose the college, and what they do on weekends.
- Walk or drive around the surrounding community.
- At the end of the college visit, encourage your student to make a list of what they liked and disliked about the college. After you’ve visited several colleges, your student can use these lists to compare each college and narrow their choice.
