Tax Tips

FAQ

Where's My Tax Rebate?
The best and most current information about when rebates, or economic stimulus payments, will be delivered is listed on the IRS Web site: Stimulus Payment Schedule.

Most people will receive their rebates the same way they choose to get refunds on their tax returns -- by direct deposit into their bank or other accounts, or by check in the mail, according to the IRS. However, there are important exceptions that affect some TurboTax customers.

IMPORTANT

The IRS has decided that some taxpayers can only get their rebates by mail, even if they get their regular tax refunds by direct deposit.  At TurboTax, this will happen if you chose to have your tax preparation fees deducted from your refund when filing your 2007 return.

For more information, please read: Getting Your Rebate -- If You Used Santa Barbara Bank & Trust To Get Your 2007 Tax Refund

The IRS has stated that for all 2007 tax filers, the schedule for receiving payments depends upon:
•    When you file your tax return, whether by April 15 or later
•    How you receive your payment, whether by direct deposit or by check
•    The last two digits of your Social Security number
•    Whether you have your tax preparation fees deducted from your refund when filing
•    If you “split” your usual 2007 tax return refund, by having it deposited directly into more than one account.

Learn the status of your rebate

Visit this IRS site: Where's My Stimulus Payment?

Use this online tool to learn when you will receive your rebate and how much it will be. The IRS states, however, that information about your payment won't be available until about a week before it is scheduled to be issued. Please refer to the schedule above.

What if I file my return after April 15?
If you do and you receive a refund, expect to get your payment about two weeks after you receive your refund – but not before the date you would have obtained it, had you filed by April 15.

What if I'm more than a little late filing a return?
If you want to receive your stimulus payment this year, the IRS says you must file a return by Oct. 15.

What happens to my rebate if I had the IRS deposit my regular tax refund directly into my IRA?
The IRS allows tax filers entitled to a tax refund to have it split and deposited directly into as many as three accounts. Some taxpayers choose to have their refund money deposited into an IRA or other tax-favored account, such as a Coverdell education savings account or a health savings account, or HSA.

Taxpayers who chose to have their refund sent to either two or three different accounts will receive their rebates by check. But if you had the IRS deposit all of your refund into one IRA or other tax-favored account directly, your rebate or stimulus payment could be deposited there as well.

What if the rebate deposit puts my IRA contribution over my annual limit?
The IRS has come up with a solution. It announced April 30 that stimulus payments directly deposited into IRAs and other tax-favored accounts can be withdrawn tax-free and penalty-free. These accounts include traditional and Roth IRAs, health savings accounts (HSAs), Archer MSAs, Coverdell education savings accounts (ESAs) and qualified tuition programs, also known as QTPs or 529 plans. The money must be withdrawn by April 15, 2009 for most taxpayers, and by Oct. 15, 2009, for those who got extensions for filing 2007 returns. Without this relief, the account holders would have to pay taxes and penalties. For more information, view this IRS announcement.

Will everyone who filed a tax return get stimulus payments according to the schedule?
The IRS has said that a small percentage of tax returns, even those filed by April 15, will need additional time to process and compute a stimulus amount.

What if I owe back taxes, delinquent child support or student loan payments?
The IRS has said it will use the stimulus payment to offset what’s owed and will send a letter explaining the offset.

If my spouse and I file a joint return, when will we receive our payment?
The IRS has said it will use the Social Security number listed first on the return to determine priority on the schedule. However, when you file you should not change the order of your names from what you had last year, in an attempt to get your stimulus payment faster. That could have the undesired effect of raising questions with the IRS, because it could send confusing messages to the IRS about your filing histories.

If I'm not getting a tax refund when I file my return, do I fill out the direct deposit line anyway?
Yes, if you want to have your rebate deposited directly to your account. Direct deposit is the to get your rebate.

When I paid the taxes owed on my 2007 return, I had the IRS debit my checking account. Will the IRS also deposit my rebate there?
No. The IRS says filers who used direct debit will get their payments by paper check in the mail.

I had my refund divided and direct deposited into three different accounts. Where will my rebate go?
The IRS said that It will not be deposited in any of them, but will be mailed as a paper check.

I chose direct deposit so my refund would be sent to my bank account. What if I've changed my account?
The IRS says that most likely the direct deposit of your rebate will be rejected and the IRS will get a notice from the bank. Then the IRS will mail you a paper check.

I had the IRS deposit my refund directly into my bank account earlier this year, but now I don't want my rebate sent there. What can I do?
The rebate will probably be sent to the same account. If the account is inactive, the IRS will just send you a check. You could also ask your bank if there are other options.

I had my refund applied directly to my 2008 taxes. Will the same thing happen to my rebate?
No, you will still get your rebate and it won't be applied to your 2008 tax bill.

Is the IRS sending out the rebates early?
You could receive your rebate sooner than the schedule says, because the first payments went out five days earlier than planned. They were paid by direct deposit starting April 28 instead of May 2. And the IRS has said that those getting their rebates by check will begin receiving them a week earlier, starting May 9 rather than May 16. Learn more about how to get a rebate

The only way to get a stimulus payment is to file a 2007 tax return, even if you don’t normally do so. For more information, view 2007 Rebates for Social Security, Railroad Retirement and Veterans' Beneficiaries. To learn more about the stimulus payments, read Tax Rebate Plan.

Note: If you won't be getting a rebate this year, or feel you're not getting your fair share, you could qualify next year. Read about Second-Chance Rebates.

What kind of notices is the IRS sending to the public?
•    Those who filed tax returns in 2006 should receive a notice in March reminding them that the only way to get a stimulus payment is to file a 2007 return.
•    The IRS will also send a second notice to the same taxpayers. It will tell each recipient how much the stimulus payment will be and when it should arrive.
•    In March, the IRS sent a SPECIAL mailing about the stimulus payments to 20.5 million recipients of certain Social Security and Veterans Affairs benefits to let them know they might qualify for a rebate.
