Are you concerned about missing a house payment or facing foreclosure because you're disabled, laid off, locked out or on strike?

If you've had a Union Plus home mortgage for a year or more, you can benefit from a unique financial safety net available through the Union Plus Mortgage Assistance Fund.

The Mortgage Assistance Fund is exclusively for union members (their parents & children) of unions participating in the Union Plus Mortgage Program and has provided over $4 million in interest-free loans to working families whose income was reduced due to unemployment, disability, strike or lock-out.

Mortgage Assistance loans in the event of unemployment, disability, strike or lock-out

If you are involuntarily unemployed, disabled or involved in a short-term strike or lock-out of less than 30 days, you can apply for an interest-free loan from the Union Plus Mortgage Assistance Program.

  • Loans are based on need and cover up to six months of mortgage payments. (You must re-certify after 3 months.)
  • Up to $1,000 of the first assistance loan payment is a grant and does not need to be repaid.
  • Repayment of this loan begins 4 months after your last assistance program payment.
  • If you sell or refinance your home, you must repay your loan in full at the time of sale when proceeds from the sale or refinancing exceed the value of the mortgage.

How to apply

Call 1-800-848-6466 as soon as you know you are unable to make your monthly payment. An application and union membership verification form will be mailed to you. Complete the application and return it with proof of your unemployment or disability and the completed union membership verification form.

When your application is received, you will be contacted to discuss your circumstances and get additional information, if needed. Decisions on applications normally are made within a week of receiving complete information.

Strike benefit for the Union Plus Mortgage program

If you're a union member involved in an authorized strike or lock-out lasting 30 days or more, Union Plus Mortgage Assistance provides additional strike/lock-out benefits.

  • Starting with your first mortgage payment after the 30th day of the strike or lock-out, Union Plus Mortgage Assistance covers your mortgage payment for up to 6 months.
  • These benefits do not have to be repaid. This is a one-time benefit for one strike or lock-out during the entire term of your mortgage.

How to apply

Call 1-800-848-6466 at least a week prior to the 30th day of the strike. You'll receive an application and a strike verification form. Complete and return these items, as instructed, so your benefit request can be processed. Your local union leader will be contacted monthly regarding the status of the strike or lock-out.

Note: Union Plus Mortgage Assistance Program benefits are based on available funds. The program reserves the power to make alternative determinations regarding program eligibility. Benefits are available for the mortgage on your primary residence only. This program may be amended or terminated at any time.
