NNU Member wins big with Union Plus Mortgage

Jamille Cabacungan, a registered nurse and National Nurses United (NNU) member, had a strong nurse role model growing up: her mother.
“Both of my parents instilled the value of helping others,” says Cabacungan. “Their approach was, ‘When you’re blessed with everything, you pay it forward.’”
Cabacungan is now a nurse at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center, where she has served as a union representative for the last seven years.
“I help out nurses with any questions,” she says. “Our priority as a union center is patient advocacy, a safe workplace and safe staffing.”
Cabacungan’s tenure has included the COVID-19 nursing crisis. She heroically led shifts as her team thinned out, and she oversaw the quick deployment of N95 masks. The San Francisco Chronicle even featured Cabacungan in a story at the time.
“Coming through that time, the values of our union, spreading the word about it and consistently getting support for my staff has become job one,” says Cabacungan.
Soon after, Cabacungan and her husband had a little boy.
“We needed space,” she recalls. “We began to house shop.”

Cabacungan and her family moved into a house close to family.
