Green home tips

Here are some tips for making your home more energy-efficient, provided by

  1. Make sure your walls and attic are well insulated.

A well-insulated house stays cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and saves you money all year.

  2. Upgrade or replace windows.

Weather-stripping, sealing and storm windows may improve the performance of older windows. But if you are able to replace your windows entirely, you'll probably start saving energy immediately, especially if you choose windows with the Energy Star rating.

  3. Plant shade trees and shrubs around your house.

In most of the country, deciduous trees will mean more shade in summer, and plenty of sun in winter (when the leaves are off the branches).

  4. Replace an older furnace with a high-efficiency system.

Your furnace may be the most expensive thing in your home to operate. Regular maintenance can make your furnace run optimally. But if your furnace is more than 15 years old, you may be better off replacing it with a newer and more energy-efficient model that will heat your home better for less money.

  5. Improve the efficiency of your hot water system.

Is your hot water heater "wrapped" in a thermal blanket? Have you considered an "on-demand" system that only heats water when you need it? You can also save money by turning down the temperature - a sound safety decision that can also reduce the risk of scalding.

  6. Replace incandescent lights with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

The electricity to run a light bulb costs much more than the bulb itself. A houseful of new CFL bulbs cost a little more to buy new, but could save you hundreds of dollars over a two-year period.

  7. Ditch that second fridge.

A second fridge is probably an older, less-efficient model. It could be costing you $150 a year in electricity just for the extra cold storage.

  8. Take advantage of new tax incentives to improve your home.

You may be able to claim credits and deductions on your taxes for investments you make in your home. Consult your tax expert.

  9. Schedule an energy audit for more expert advice on your home as a whole.

The one-time investment in a home energy audit could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars over a 10-year period. Plus, you may qualify for rebates on new purchases. [Link to home energy audit page]
